“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”Ernest Hemingway

Originally established within the bustling North Sea port of Great Yarmouth, Burroughs began shipping wines and spirits as far back as 1772.

The present portfolio reflects not only the changes in the world of wine across the ensuing quarter of a millennium, but encompasses a renewed desire to seek individual wines of authenticity and delight.

The wish to respect a history and culture of traditional wine making, whilst at the same time seeking to interpret a contemporary approach to wine, is firmly at the heart of Burroughs current list.

As we prefer to engage with the growers and the winemakers around the world, rather than their agents and negotiators, the majority of our wines are sourced direct. The desire to supply such exclusivity remains paramount, as does the quest for exciting new wines.

The world of wine is complex and frequently intimidating, its sheer variety can seem as much of an obstacle as it can an exciting attribute. As a result the team at Burroughs have chosen to look beyond the commonplace portrayal of the traditional wine ‘supplier’ and prefer instead to be seen as wine ‘partners’.

From the provision of tailor-made tastings and staff tuition through to vineyard tours, wine list creation and winemaker visits, Burroughs is committed to this partnership from the very first moment our wines are selected.

Wine is never less than a compelling adventure, and we hope we may be allowed to share it with you.
